A softbox works by pushing LED output through a large diffusion surface. The bigger and closer that surface is relative to your subject, the softer the light and the gentler the shadow edge. Panel lights trade some of that softness for portability and precise colour control, and COB handheld lights give you a punchy key light you can move around a set.
