Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026. If you own an iPhone 17 Pro Max, or you are choosing between the two, here is the honest comparison — including the part that matters for your existing accessories.
The short answer
Keep your iPhone 17 Pro Max if you already own one. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a refinement, not a reinvention, and nothing in it justifies replacing a one-year-old flagship unless photography is central to your work.
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you are upgrading from an iPhone 15 Pro or older and want the newest camera and chip, or if the variable aperture camera genuinely matters to you.
Consider a discounted iPhone 17 Pro Max if you are upgrading from an older phone and want to save money — resellers usually cut prices on the outgoing model once the new one lands.

What actually changed
The variable aperture camera. This is the headline upgrade, and it is on both the Pro and the Pro Max. Six mechanical blades let the main camera switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. The wide setting is noticeably better in low light; the narrower settings keep everyone sharp in group photos. If you shoot seriously, this is real. If you mostly post to Instagram, you will barely notice it.
The 2nm A20 Pro chip. Faster on paper, and cooler under load thanks to a much larger vapor chamber. For everyday use the A19 Pro already handles everything, including Apple Intelligence.
A smaller Dynamic Island. A welcome cosmetic change, not a reason to spend $1,299 on its own.
The price factor in Lebanon
The iPhone 18 Pro Max launched $100 above last year's price. In Lebanon, where phones are bought outright with no carrier subsidy, the gap between a discounted iPhone 17 Pro Max and a new iPhone 18 Pro Max comes entirely out of your pocket — enough to cover a case, a screen protector, a power bank and a good pair of earbuds.
Good news for your accessories
This is where this generation is unusually friendly. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has exactly the same body dimensions as the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The camera plateau is only a tenth of a millimetre thicker.
- Cases: most iPhone 17 Pro Max cases fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max, especially those with an open camera cutout. Apple does not officially list them as compatible, but major case brands now sell one case for both. Ours are listed as iPhone 17/18 Pro Max.
- Camera lens protectors: do not carry over — the camera island changed shape for the new main lens.
- Chargers, cables, MagSafe, power banks, car mounts: all carry over with no compatibility worries.
So if you upgrade, the only protection you definitely need to replace is the camera lens protector.
